Tobie is a senior lecturer and director of research in Design at Goldsmiths and has held research roles since 2003.
He takes a collaborative and speculative approach to design through practice-based research with issue-based communities. His designs have been exhibited internationally, including shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Triennial in Beijing.
Tobie led two EPSRC public engagement projects, Biojewellery and Material Beliefs, where speculative design and upstream engagement with biotech become mixed up, providing a focus for subsequent research. He has undertaken industry research partnerships with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London, Philips Design, Intel and France Telecom.
Current supervisory topics include participatory design approaches with civic organisations and embodied design methods through participatory ethnographies with theatre and climbing practitioners.
