HBBE

Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment

The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment is a multi-disciplinary research hub based at Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, funded by Research England.

HBBE brings together designers, bioscientists, engineers and architects to work across scales.

From genetic engineering to large scale prototyping, they develop a new generation of self-sustaining Living Buildings which are responsible and responsive to their natural environment which are grown using biological materials, that metabolise their own waste, and modulate their microbiome to benefit human and ecological health and wellbeing.
