Open call: Mineral

Design Researchers in Residence 2025/26

The time for the residency open call has rolled around once again.

For its fifth consecutive year, Future Observatory is excited to share the open call for our programme, Design Researchers in Residence.

The residency supports thinkers at the start of their careers to spend a year developing a new research project in response to a theme, and this year that's Mineral.

This year's residency aims to support research that interrogates intersecting mineral landscapes in the UK – geological, ecological and urban – through case studies, field research, and by building human and non-human relationships. From kaolin pits in Cornwall to salt mines in North Yorkshire, the UK's geological landscape is scarred by centuries of mineral extraction. To read the full brief, scroll down to the application link.

Taking on a cohort of four design researchers from a range of design disciplines, the residency is a unique opportunity to develop a project over a nine-month period. Each resident is provided with studio space at the museum and towards the end of the residency, their work is presented in a free display at the Design Museum and they also have a chance to do some public programming around their project.

Each resident is provided with a commissioning budget of £6,000, which goes directly towards producing the work that will be presented at the end of the residency. A bursary of £11,400 is also offered to support the development of their career and to fund their practice.

Have a look at our past cohorts, previous displays and publications to get a sense of the variety of approaches taken by previous residents, as well as the exciting outcomes of their research.

If you're a practitioner thinking about all things mineral, we'd love to hear from you!
