Dr Elizabeth Gaston is an Assistant Professor in the Northumbria School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries.
Elizabeth’s research investigates design-led, product solutions to societal issues through Knit Thinking, the combination of explicit textile knowledge and abductive reasoning, using craft methodologies.
Her investigation of perceptual colour and pattern in knitwear has been awarded a Textile Society Professional Development award (2021) and a Fellowship of the Textile Institute (2023) and has been presented globally. Interdisciplinary approaches investigate experimental architectural practice, utilising the unique properties of textile structures for carbon reduction in the construction industry.
She leads Knit Network North, initiating collaborative research with knit educators and industry in the North of England and has implemented pioneering, interdisciplinary architecture/knit education at Northumbria University.
